All CPEs are Not Created Equal: Choosing a CPE Wisely – So That TR-069 Runs Smoothly on Your Network | Part 3

In part 1 and part 2 of this post, we explored what to look for in a CPE. This third section of the post offers some final tips on selecting the CPE that best meets your needs and ensures that TR-069 runs successfully on your company’s network.

Tip 7: Check You Have Access to Comprehensive Wi-Fi Stats

You can reduce support costs by purchasing a CPE that includes – in its data model – details of the wireless signal strength and additional WiFi statistics such as neighbors’ channel, noise level, and more – information that helps solve WiFi-related problems during a support call.

Tip 8: Get the Most Out of Your System with Active and Passive Notification

In order for the ACS to provide you with advanced options, your CPE must support both Active and Passive notification – a feature that gives you better event management and QoE monitoring.

Using Active and Passive notification, we find that we are able to work magic: We can create ALTERS if QoE drops. We can identify problems in the CPE via our ACS before the user has noticed it. And we can provide proactive tools to help you resolve problems automatically.

Tip 9: Make Sure There’s Support for Important Diagnostics Tests

Check that the CPE you intend to purchase supports a range of important diagnostics tests that can help you cut your support costs. These include speed tests performed by the CPE without user intervention (as defined by TR-143), ping tests, ATM loopback, DNS diagnostics, trace, and others.

Tip 10: Don’t Let Other Service Providers Hijack Your Device

You work hard to get each subscriber….Don’t let other service providers enjoy the fruits of your work! Avoid allowing other service providers to migrate subscribers to their service using your device..

We recommend that you disable the ability of third parties to change sensitive settings, including ACS URL, authentication method, TR-069 user name and password for authentication to your ACS, and periodic inform interval.

This is the final section of a three-part post about how to choose the right CPE for your network. To learn more about how to choose a CPE, see part 1and part 2.
